District of North Cowichan
Community Wildfire Prevention Plan
DHC completed a Community Wildfire Protection Plan for the District of North Cowichan and provided an optional public information brochure as an add-on to the contract. Rapid development in the community's urban interface has increased the number of neighbourhoods adjacent to forest fuels, while climate change and development impacts have led to declines in tree and forest health which can contribute to fuel build up. In recognition of the changing climate, fuel hazard, and the progression of municipal policy and best practices, the District obtained funding to update its Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) in 2019. DHC commenced work in August of 2019 and completed delivery in February 2020. As a result of the high proportion of private land in the municipality, DHC's foresters provided an updated fuel type layer for wildfire behavior analysis. The CWPP was delivered to the UBCM's current standards.
