City of Prince George
Community Wildfire Prevention Plan & Wildfire Mitigation Action Plan
DHC completed a Community Wildfire Protection Plan for the City of Prince George as well as the surrounding Regional District of Fraser-Fort George and provided a number of supporting documents. The urban and native forests in and around the city have been severely impacted by mountain pine beetle, and more recently Douglas-fir beetle, which has increased the volume of dead, woody fuels that pose a hazard to the community in the event of a wildfire. In recognition of the changing climate, fuel hazard, and the progression of municipal policy and best practices, the City has obtained funding to update its Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). This was produced following 2017 UBCM standards. A number of additional assessments and BMPs are being addressed as part of this project. These include recommendations to improve forest management, post fire restoration planning, the integration and implementation of wildfire risk management objectives in broader city policy and programs, a detailed review of development permit policy, recommendations to encourage fuel treatment of private lands, and an assessment of fire insects and disease as they relate to wildfire risk. This project will be completed in the fall of 2018.
