Biodiversity and Natural Areas Policy
Diamond Head Consulting developed a Biodiversity and Natural Areas Policy to understand and manage the City’s natural areas. This project requires a detailed biophysical inventory of natural areas within the City. Ecological characteristics such as ecology, vegetation communities, sensitive environmental features, and tree canopy were recorded using in-the-field and remote sensing techniques such as LiDAR. These were compiled into a discussion of the state of these natural areas, their health, succession, impacts, and risks to protect, connect, and restore existing natural assets within the City. The document has been developed into a “toolkit” with recommendations for protecting and enhancing natural areas and features within parks and the urban matrix. This report will inform the City’s Climate and Environment Strategy being developed concurrently.
