City of Winnipeg
Urban Forest Strategy
Diamond Head is working with the City of Winnipeg to develop a Comprehensive Urban Forest Strategy for 2021-2041 with community input. A State of the Urban Forest report has been prepared to establish the baseline condition of the forest resource, the program and the key challenges and opportunities to be addressed by the Strategy. A comprehensive community engagement process was completed for Phase 1 of the work, consisting of walking tours, online open houses and stakeholder workshops, and an ArcGIS Story Map to explore the state of the urban forest report and data. Winnipeg’s strategy will support the City in responding to the significant challenges of maintaining and enhancing canopy while managing both Dutch elm disease (DED) and emerald ash borer (EAB) that threaten more than 50% of its urban forest resource. The final Strategy will strengthen the policy platform for urban forest initiatives by providing the City with a shared vision, SMART objectives and targets, and a comprehensive set of actions supported by timelines and budgets for implementation.
